Southern Catering Project Group

Welcome to the Southern Catering Project Group - more commonly known as the SCPG.

The SCPG was set up by a group of SRT members keen to preserve railway wagons before they became extinct or - even worse - got scrapped.

The objective of the SCPG is to acquire and restore wagons - particularly examples of more rare types - the most recent acquisition being a Southern Railway LING open wagon.

Although most of the 33 wagons are of ex-BR origin, 6 are ex-SR, three are ex-LNER and one is ex-LMS.

The Group restores the wagons for use on the Swanage Railway. With one or two exceptions, these are restored to a working condition rather than an ex-works one. With flat and open wagons, this usually means a new floor, replacement of some side planks, and restoration of the running gear and axle boxes. With vans, it always means a new roof and selected body panels.

Over the last 15 years, the SCPG has averaged a restoration rate of one wagon per year with the help of many people. Special mention must be made of Geoff and June Neale and their team at Corfe Castle (four complete vans and work on other wagons), and also Frank Robert's team at Herston (a TUBE and two CONFLATs).

The majority of the Group's wagons can be seen at Swanage, but the two LOWFIT wagons are currently on the Mid-Hants Railway - restored to ex-works condition - and the 20-ton oil tank wagon is currently at Shillingstone.
